ECONOMY

1 WELLINGTON, August 23 I. "The Prime Minister and other members went about urging economy, but the contrary was the ease," declared Mr. Isitt in the House this evening. The Minister of Public Works informed a deputation the other day that he could not proceed with a certain work owing to the shortage of funds, and yet in Christchurch existing buildings were being pulled down all over the place to permit of picture shows being erected. During the war the Government should have refused to allow one erection of any more pic-' ture shows or racing stands. Mr. Isitt approved of the penny tax on picture shows. The people, he> said, must be taught; 4hrift. The sole object of the advocates for the restriction was to save waste. Was it any good to' this country, he asked, for women to go and spend £3 10s on high-legged boots, simply; because the Customs duty amounted to ten shillings ? .
