SECOND-LIEUT ROBERT TENNENT

Our esteemed townsman, Mr. D. Ten* neut, received word from the Defence Department that his son Second-Lieut. R. Tennclit h\l been killed inaction.. Some weeks ago advice was received that Lieut. Tennent was missing. Subsequently it was reported that he . was believed to be a prisoner of war in Germany, Mr. Tennent made every attempt to ascertain whether his son Was a prisoner in Germany, but was unsuccessful. It now -appears that Lieut. Tennent was killed inthej big offensive at Messines. The de\ ceased soldier was only twenty-one years of age. He was educated at" the Grey District High School, and was noted for his real, solid work as. a pupil. After leaving school he en;', tercd the employ of Messrs Forsyth and McKay, where he remained until, he enlisted, leaving for the front as lieutenant with the loth Reinforcements. He jinadc good; in the camp and was highly respected by officers and men alike. He had the .proud:, distinction of being the best bombthrower in his battalion, and ' reports from other lads at the front state that "Bob. was always in the thicks of any fighting that was going on-. This young lieutenant was a model of, a nmn in physique and was a spienr. did footballer and athlete. In his soual life he excelled and was keen on ■locution and singing. The parents.- --! md family will have the sincere ■sym■oathy of this community in their sad loss, but will have, the consoling knowledge that Lieut. Tennent willingly, took part in the terrible struggle for. the freedom of humanity, and that, even death itself did not deter him' from the path of duty, which, alas,, calls for the sacrifice of so many.," 1 dear ones. A memorial service to-thei memory of the deceased 'will he held, lin St. John's Presbyterian Church tomorrow evening. The Territorial Rifle Clubs and Senior Cadets are requested to parade at the Drill Shed at 6.30 o'clock. •
