The relatives of Private Blewman have received the following message from the Minister of Defence: "Private James Blewman, reported missing on June 7th, has turned up safely and has re.joined his unit."
The Mayor (Mr.- J. D. Lynch) .will leave this morning by the express on a business visit to Wellington. He expects to be away about a week, during which time Councillor Parfitt will take the office of Deputy-Mayor.
A Press Association message from Christchurch states that Mr. Duncan Rutherford, the well-known North Canterbury pastroalist (brother of Mr A. W. Rutherford, ex-M.P.) died somewhat suddenly yesterday afternoon. He entered a private hospital on Sunday night y suffering from /an internal trouble. Lately his name, had bceri associated with the Queen Mary Hospital at Hanmer Springs for convalescent New Zealand soldr iers to which institution he extended unbounded generosity.
Sapper John McLaugblan, of the Tunnelling Corps, who is at present on final leavej. was entertaiu/d by the residents of Te Kinga-at u^smoke concert. Mr. Mansoii occupied tlie chair, and, on behalf of the soldier's friends in. -tße^ district, presented him with a very handsome wristlet watch. Many felicitous speeches were made and responded to, aiid altogether a pleasant couple of hours were spent. Theliouour'ed guest is a son of Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlan, of Ngakerc, and is a member of a family whien has done a.'-lpt for love of country. One brother niadef the supreme sacrifice at Gallipoli; another is still fighting iv France, while a third is about to go into camp. His father is *a Maori War veteran, and owing to injuries sutaiucd while: serving with his regiment, ho subsequently had 0110 of his legs amputated.

A fine example of the fighting spirit is ffiven by Private F. J. H. Pirani, a son of Mr. Fred Pirani. „ Private Pirani was wounded at Gallippli^ and, havinjr returned to. New Zealand, was discharged as unfit for active service. Twelve months ago he left for England to re-enlist, and, after a spell at Hornchurch and Codford. he reached Sling Camp, and shortly afterwards left with his battalion for prance, where he was now been fighting for some time. His brother Captain P. Pirani, who is in the Imperial Army, has been, twice wounded, and is now back in the 'trenches.
