Mr. G. H. Harris, formerly Clerk of the Court and Mining Registrar at Kumara, which position he resigned to tik?., has been offered and accepted a tika, ha sbcen offered and accepted a position as assistant clerk in the Magistrate's Court at Greymouth.- Mr. Harris expects to take up his duties early next week.
Mr. W. Jeffries, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned home on Saturday evening. He was accompanied by his brother, Mr. J. K. Jeffries.
The last issue of the New Zealand Gazette notifies that His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to approve of the promotion of Lieut. W. J. Rcnton, of the N.Z. Dental ; Corps, to be temporary captain, to date from June 17th, 1917.
"The Nomad," the' official organ of the 22nd Reinforcements, has reached Hokitika. This little journal ia far in advance of what we have been used to in this kind of literature. " Some really good "sketches of officers appear ,in the publication, quite one of the best being that of Surgeon-Captain J. A. Doctor, formerly of Hokitika.-"
The death took place at the Westland Hospital on Sunday of another of the old pioneers of Westland iiitlie person of Mr. William Outon.- Deceased, who was 76 years of age, was a native of Brighton, England. He was a veteran of the Crimean War and one of the first members of the First Westland Rifles.
A pleasing little ceremony took place at the Westland Hospital on Thursday last, the occasion being the presenta- ' tion of a handsome clock to Mrs. Freitas, who has resigned her position. iiV the institution. Matron Little, inmaking the presentation, referred to the cbtccm iv which Mrs FreTias was held by the inmates and staff," andV-^ wished, her every help and prosperity. Mrs. Freitas has been on the staff of the Westland Hospital for two and a half years, and Her resignation is sincerely regretted.
A serious and painful accident happened to 1 a bushmau named F. Baretta, employed at Baxter Bros.' mill', at Humphrey's on Saturday afternoon. He was engaged jacking logs on to a trolley, when one log rolled back on him crushing him somewhat severely. The snfftrer. was at once removed to the Westland Hospital, where he was attended by Dr. Tcichelmanu. On en- .. quiry yesterday I was informed that the injuries were serious but Baretta *V was progressing satisfactorily. Captain Colclough arrived by last evening's train on an official visit.
The Canterbury No. 2 Military Service Board will arrive in Hokitika on Saturday night and will hold an appeal court on Monday. The usual monthly meeting of tile Wcstlaud Hospital and Charitable Aid Board will be held this evening.
The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board was held on Friday evening, but beyond the passing of accounts and routine business there >vas nothing to report.
A small catch of whitebait was made in the Hokitika River on Saturday and was? readily disposed of at 4/- per pint.
The Town Band, under .Conductor C. Boss, played a very enjoyable programme on Cass Square, on 'Sunday afternoon. Attracted by the beautiful weather there was a large gathering of residents on the square to listen to the music. A more-, frequent appearance of the band in public would be appreciated. It is only when the .band comes out after a long retirement that the public realises what a valuable asset we have iv our band. ' In this respect it ,may be added that the .band is much in need of financial assistance and any help that can be given would be welcome. At the meeting of the Canterbury Education, Board on Friday, Mr Banks, sptiul.int; in' regard to the Waitaha School, said that the teacher was com- • pelled to live in the porch of 1 asK§* > fci school, as accommodation could not be found iv the district. He moved that the School " Committee be informed that unless accommodation is found for the teacher the school, will be closed. After considerable discussion, the motion was lost.- ■■ ' * The Church of England Diocesan Committee has now 1 completed all arrangements to start a girls' hostel in ' Hokitika. It is understood that the eoiTiHiitlco h i is secured tbo premises and grounds, the property of Mrs. = Macandrew, for the purposes of the in-. stitution. The hostel is intended tojlii be a home where girls;*especially those^p from a distance who are receivingjl||f their education in Hokitika, can re^Hl ceive board and lodging under th|ffl personal care of a deaconess. I under^H stund that such a hostel- wilj meet j^| growing demand, in Westland, andt^fH Bishop of Christchurch and the D^H ccsan Education Committee are actilg^H wisely in including Westland- in, thelfH cl.urch education scheme. Sister Doraj^B who is; to be in charge, of the hostel^f is expected to arrive from Norfolk^* Island this month, and will come oiu^ at once to Hokitika with Novice Con* stance, who is to assist her in the' management of the hostel. It is stated that a A substantial sum has already lj been contributed iv Canterbury to- \ wards the furnishing of the hostel. *
