EAST OF CERNY.
FRENCH IMPROVE POSITIONS,

LONDON, July «. A French communique states: There is an intense German bombardment from north of L'Affaux Mill to Froiduiont Farm, preceded by; violent "sattacks iv four different sectors ou:^his front. After desperate fighting the enemy masses were driven off with very heavy losses. Our positions were entirely maintained. Between Lcs^Bovcttes and Froidmont Farm an attack developed 1 , on a front of three kilometres. After a several hours' struggle the enemy were ejected froui^thc iirst line elements which he had penetrated. We -appreciably extended ; our position which we retook i*^2s*Fy>lst cast of Cerny. We brilliantly carried three strong salients on the "left bank of the Meuse. West of Mort Homme and south of Hill 304 counter-attacks were repulsed.
