(Rec. July 4, 6. ■so p.m.) LONDON, July 3. Reuter's special correspondent on the British front srives an extract from a German letter, found at Messines Riidge. It| states: "We have been fourteen days under a hellish fire day and night. We crouch together in, holes, awaitinwr our doom wearing gas masks as the English fire gas shells weighing- a hundred weight and aerial torpedoes into our trench. -Work is impossible with shrapnel falling all night. "So far our division lias -been composed of three regiments. We have lost 3400 men in barely three months. We are quite helpless against the British and cannot sit or lie down. -Our artillery cannot fire during the day. "We all hope to be taken prisoner otherwise we shall all go mad."
