The vital statistics for Hokitika f.u* the month of June were :. births 13, deaths 9. The Customs revenue collected at Hokitika for June totalled .£327 us Bd. .Beer duty realised 15s 5<3. The usual monthly meeting- the Hokitika Harbour Board will be:held on Friday evening. Mr. White, Government Auditor, has practically finished ' his work in Hokitika and proceeds to Greymouth at the end of this week. . . Mr. J. W. Smjjjp, 'Stock Inspector,' leaves on an official visit to South Westland to-day. He expects to be absent about 10 days and will proceed south a<; far as the W.oiho Gorere? : The Defender is on the slip in Wellington undergoing her 'annual overhaul. It is expected she will be in <-ommission again- in the course of a few days. . . The bad weather of the last week or two has greatly delayed the prosnectino- operation* at. Stewart of Hokitika and a brother of Mr. W. StewJart manager of the Hokitika Gas Works. This, is the second occasion on which Private .Stewart has been wounded; and his friends will sincerely -hope that he" will soon -recover and be able \ to again take his place with his comrades in the firing 'line. ' . A ' .■■'•' Mr. ED. McKenzie, who represents large sawmilling. interests in New South Wales, returned from South Westland by the last trip of the A. K. 'Jane and proceeded to Christchurch by the .overland express yesterday en route for Sydney. Mr. McKenzie who has been inspecting the timber areas in the far south, expresses himself as well satisfied with what . he has .seen, and expects that as a result !of his visit important developments in the sawmilling business will 1 shortly: follow.
