Apart from soldiers, the total number of persons who arrived in the Dominion during: igi6 was 21,799, and the departures during- the year numbered '.21,163,. the excess of arrivals over departures for the year beino; 636. According- to returns furnished by the im migration officers, 3394 persons arrived from the United Kingdom and 2608 departed therefor during- the year. From the Commpnwealth of Australia the arrivals are returned as numbering- -15.321. persons, and the departures thereto as 16,300 persons. Arrivals arid departures from and to other countries were 3084 and 2152 persons respectively. Of the 21,790 persons who came to New Zealand last year 2736, or 12.55 per cent, of the total, were children under twelve years of ag-e : .and of the 21,163 departures the children- numbered 2 t 73, or r0.27 per cent,
