The octopus is a fish that is usually regarded with the ' greatest horror by everyone. A curious thing 1 in connection with these dreaded denizens of the deep is that though they are known to -exist in large numbers in Wellinerton Harbour one seldom hears of any accident in which they are concerned. The fishermen g.et them nearly at every haul of the nets, and they are not infrequently caug-ht on lines from some of the suburban wharves. These are usually smaller specimens from two, to three feet between the tips of the out-stretched feelers. It is seldom that a big- one is landed. The theory is that the octopus comes to breed among- the kelp, and having- done so returns to the deeper waters, leaving; the. young- ones to fend themselves ttt the warmer in-shore waters;
