FORGERY CASE

-^ CLERK COMMITTED FOR i SENTENCE. CHRISTCHURCH, October 29. Jose ,Gunderscn, a young man appeared at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. T. A. 8.. Bailey, S.M., on a series of charges of forging accountable receipts, the dates and amounts being as follows : April 20th, .£2O 14s cjd; June 6th, £20 3s 4d ; July 21s, 2s. October sth, £16 13s 4d. Mr. Raymond, K.C., prosecuted, and Mr Alpers appeared on behalf of the accused. Thomas D. Kendall, local deputy for the Public Trustee, t said that the accused had been employed as a clerk at the Christchurch office for the past three years, and for the two years previously at Wellington. His salary was ,£llO a year. The voucher produced, £16 13s 4d, represented the monthly instalment duo to Hiss Hirons," who resided in Canada, and it was the duty of the accused to see that the money was remitted. Witness's' attention was drawn to the ;signature on the voucher on October nth and he called the accused into . his room, and asked him if he had made the October remittance to Miss Mirons. He said: "No," and when asked what he had done with the mo.nev, said, "It's no use trying to hide it--1 have used it." Later, the accused said that he had financial worries, and being pressed for money had taken I the amount referred to. He admitted 'also taking other moneys. Accused wrote out the statements produced, making certain admissions. Witness had since gone through the accused's accounts, the accused giving assistance. , " To Mr. Alpors : • Since the accusod was arrested he had called for witness, and given certain useful information. Leslie, A. Morrison, cashier at the' Public Trust Office. Christchurch, gave evidenre as to cashing the vouchers (produced) for accused. payable on account of certain clients abroad of the Public Trust Office. None of the money had been returned by accused. Detective J. Torrence said that he had arrested the accused on October inth.- When told, the charges, accused admitted forging the names on the three vouchers produced. Accused pleaded guilty to all the charges, which were taken together, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed in .£IOO, accused's own recognisance, and £100 surety. •
