ENGINEER'S REPORT

At the evening sitting of the Council the Engineer reported on several matters referred to him, which .were dealt with ;is follows: — In regard to J. F. Anderson's claim for £10 15s for removal of slips, the report being somewhat favourable the cbim was entertained. The Engineer reported in regard to Edwyn ami Sandy streets, Blackball, that lie could find no record of their having been dedicated to the public. — Received, aud resolved, on the motion of Cr Irvine, that the County Clerk communicate on the matter with the Attorney (Christchurch) of the property. As instructed, the Engineer reported that a nineinch pipe culvert had been constructed across the road at Coal CreeJf to drain an unsightly pool that has existed for many years at the cross roads at Ma uderson 's. — Approved. The Engineer reported in regard to a gravel reserve opposite the Creamery, i'oerua Settlement. Such was of little value as a general gravel pit, but might be used as a borrow pit and as a site for a roadman's dwelling. He had asked the Commissioner of Lands that the reserve be left for public pui'poses. — Approved. The Engineer reported that the protective fence along the road between OBbden o ridge and quarry was originally constructed by Messrs Hungerford and McKay, contractors for harbour works, the erection of the fence being one of the conditions imposed on the grant for permission to lay the railway on the road. The fence, which had been maintained by the Harboaur Board, had been reconstructed by the Board ten years ago, but was now in a bad state of repair, and he had called the attention of the Board's Engineer to the necessity for repairs. — Approved. lii regard to the overflow of New River at Marsden, since November last the low ground between Marsden and New River bridge, on the Marsden-Kumara road, is overflowed even by small freshets. A party of Chinese were depositing tailings in the river at the downside stream of the bridge and closer than five chains thereto, contrary to the provisions of the Mining Act. These Chinamen were written to in November last calling upon them to cease operations, but they still continue. — Received, and resolved that action be taken to compel the Chinamen to prevent any further deposit of tailings witnin the statu- ( tory distance of the bridge. A request by B. Gibbie for a road from Cameron's road to New River would necessitate a visit to the locality before reporting on the probable cost of road. — Received, a report to be submitted' to thu next meeting. In regard to H. Wheeler's offer to make four culverts if the Council would supply 100 condemned silver pine sleepers, the Engineer recommended the offer be favorably considered if the sleepers could be procured at a cost of Is each. — Received, and resolved that Mr Wheeler be offered .£5 ""towards the construction of culverts on condition that the work is carried out to the satisfaction of the Engineer. The Engineer reported that no sum had been voted by Parliament for the Kaimata Road, but there was a sum of £100 on the Land Improvement Account for the Kaimata Block. It mis;ht be possible to obtain this sum in applying to the Commissioner of Crown Lands. The old tramway that formerly gave access to Kaimata whs scarcely passable for pedestrians. — Received and resolved that application be made -to the Commissioner for the expenditure of the vote on the road in question.
