THE SLEEPERS AWAKENED

A BUCOLIC JOKE^

(Contributed by P v )

Unusually we think of the country life as dead ..and devoid of all fun, but the dwellers 1 in the wilderness enjoy miany a laugh amongst themselves, as the following" will show.:. —

Recently at a dance of some importance hed dn a township not 100 miles from Lake Brunner, two weary devotees of the light fantastic retired late', (or early, as you please), to. their virtuous couch, bent on making: much out off the- little time then left for slumber; but, alas ! a practical joker seeing- them safely ensconed, hied hi to the fowl pen and deftly arresting- the cock of the walk, surreptitiously planted the noble bird between the sleeping beauties and hastily covered over the bed clothes. • -

Drowsily the slumberers marvelled at the ferocty of the commercial travellers, but the break down aroused the natural instincts of Qbanticleer, who did' his duty so nobly that he partally awakened the sleepers. Pinching- each other in astonishment they rubbed their eyes and secretly wond er'ed- whether dingbats or dreams were troubling- them still, or how to account for. the vision of cockerel impudence that so lordly strutted across the bed 1 clothes.

," Feeling is believing 1 ," - thought one, and he made a grab, > but Mr. Rooster with a. saucy blink of his handsome tail, essayed a dart for the open window. The -nearer sleeper bow sufficiently awakened, slipped down the sash— a little later but not too late to secure a slight souvenir of his nocturnal visitor in the' shape of a handful of tail feathers— tangible evidence at least to support his tail but who had the laugh after all. -\
