THE MAHENO HELD UP
GOVERNMENT URGED TO INTERVENE. (By Electric Telegraph — Copyright.) (Per United Presn Association.) (Red. 11.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 16. , The Daily Telegraph, commenting on the laying up of the Maheno, allegedly owing to the firemen declining to work except on prohibitive terms which the owners say they are unable to pay, instances the Government intervening .to prevent rises in commodities, and says the question now is will the Government on the same principle seize the recalcitrant firemen and force them into the stokehold, where a State official will sell their labour at a fixed price. It might be just as serious for the people deprived of oversea communication as cream tartar cornering, which the Government took steps to prevent.
