The Attorney-General has issued a "•rit for £5000 damages against the Workman (newspaper) for alleged defamation contained in. comments rewarding the Monaro election. SMALLPOX. SYDNEY, Oct. 16. Smallpox is still lingering here. On ?n average two cases, mostly from the metropolitan area, are daily reported : also a number of cases from country centres. Ml are of a mild type. ADDRESS-IN-REPLY. MELBOURNE, Oct. 16. In the Federal House of Representatives last night, Mr. J. Crook (Leader of the Liberal Opposition continued the Address-in-Reply debate. He stated that the Government was submitting a controversial programme during the present grave situation. Mr. Fisher, in reply, said that the Government would co-operate with the Opposition ioi every matter of a national character, and would pledge the last man and the last shilling to see a successful issue of the war, but Australia was practically at peace, and there was no reason why they should not proceed with legislation.
