THE EARTHQUAKE
=— GREAT DAMAGE WROUGHT. (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, Oct. 7. The earthquake at 6.45 this morning was the severest felt in Gisborne for IS years, but was of steady duration, and beyond stopping the town clock" and such minoT accidents, caused little damage. In. the country districts, however, the danger was very severe. At Tokomaru' Bay a local bricklayer has already received orders to build no les than 55 chimneys to replace those which, fell down during the quake, and several business premises are badly damaged, notably the Farmers Co-op-erative Store, where it will take £700 again to make things shipshape, the whole of the windows of which were t m out and the plate glass windows were smashed. All over the township alarming fissures appeared in the roads while there were at least two huge landslips, which brought down thousands of tons of earth. It is the same in all the country districts, hotel bars suffering heavily with broken bottles, the contents of the shelves being thrown on to the floors. So far no loss of life is reported but it is feared that a man named G. A. T. Jones or " Percy >} Jones was enguifed by a land slide, at Cape Kunaway. So far no reliable news has been received from the Bay of Plenty coast and the Opotiki district. The quake hasted from two to four minutes according to locality, and its direction was north-east to south-west. There were other' smaller shakes up the coast throughout the day.
For the month of August Wuimate (South Island) was the driest town in New Zealand, only 2 points of rain falling. Lincoln registered 54 points, Nelson 55,. Tauranga 56- Hokj tika was the wettest place, 600 points of rain falling there*, and' 460 in Invercafgill.- -Though only 116 points fell in Auckland, it rained twenty days of the month in the northern 'city.
