A GREYMOUTH ASSET

(To the Editor.)

Sir.— While a certain amount of .energy is being- infused into tepid .swimming- baths, etc., and while the Mayor is still thinking over the great things he is going to do to beautify our town, and cannot make up his mind where to begin, it might interest your readers and the Tourist Department to know that nine miles inland from Rotomanu there rises one of the finest little hot springs in the South Island of this Dominion. From Rotomanu a track has been, blazed to Mount How a distance of two miles and. if this track was continued on it would come out at Lake Haupiri, and from there on to the Springs the track is already formed only requirifier a little The scenery that abounds on all sides cannot be surpassed in any part of the colony. Lake Haurtjri teams with beautiful trout and I understand that that delicious fish, gxeyling has again made its appearance in the different j streams in this locality. My object! for writing this letter is to enlighten the people of Greymouth on the valu-| pble asset they have at cheir back doors, and to bestir themselves and assist in having" these wonderful places of interest opened -up. I venture to say that if such places as I have men tioned were within reach of any other town of the same size as Greymouth the 1 people would never rest until they had brought the matter under the n.oticse of the powers that be and secured a vote on the Estimates to have the track continued to these springs. What a lovely outing it would be to the individual who is cooped up all the week to be able to take a bath in a natural hot spring at the weekend. The trouble is we have no public men t)f anjr. calibre and what we have are trying to make up their minds which is the best side of party p.olitics to belong- to, and if they; can't get a hearing on .either side they are up against the Government. la this ; little town there is the finest opening for a public man with & little ginger in him than there is in any part of. the Dominion. I- am etc., WOOD HEN.
