Nearly half of Oldwitch City, Salem, rich m historic build «ngs_was devastated by a hre which caused a Vvss oi twenty million dollars and destroyed one thousand buildings, including a score, of manufacturng establishments. It made ten thousand of 45,000 inhabitants ' homeless. The file originated in a leather factory and swept through the shoe leather district mining every building in a -curving- path tWo miles long- and half a" mile wide. The burning- embeis started a fire in two other /sections in the fashionable residence district. For a time the uhole city seemed doomed;.
