I Football is becoming- as uncertain as cricket, 'and very few would lhave cared to predict that Kohinoors would have scored a win over the redoubt able StaT team fresh from their victory over Hokitika. The ground, in spite of the heavy rain was in a surprisitngly jyood condition, And was free from water except in one spot. The g-.ame was a forward one and Stars may put down their defeat to I the fact that they tried to pick up the J ball instead of .'using their feet. Time and again they got well within strik-i ing distance of the Kohinoor's citadel 1 when some ill-advised one would spoil) alls the good work by attempting . to | pick up the ball. The Kphinoor foi*j wards played very solidly. -They kept well together and used their feet well in the dribbling rushes which were a feature of their play. The Star backs had a day off, and with Nelson practically useless with a bad shoulder, and a man sh^r*- : - *he forwards through a player being ordered off | they were in for a real spell of ill | luck. The forwards greatly missed ' Pring, for his fast following up would have been a great service.. Stars kicked off, r»r«d returned to half way. H- 11 made a miss kick and the ball' rebounded, but Nelson, came smartly to the rescue. K<h .hinoors continued t^ — ""«*, and from some loose play near the Star line the ball came to Thomas who dropped a splendid goal. This score put the Kohinoors in good heart, and their forwards came away with a splendid dribble, but -McCarthy spoiled the good work 1 Efc EsStfg; '68 side. StaT hookers got the ball and Erickson got his backs in motion but Morris was unable' to take Hall's pass and the Kohinoor forward swarmed over -him, and carried the- ball close to the line, Browa broke away but Morris grassed him neatly. Another dribbling rush by Kohinoors was stopped by Reid in good style. Shortly afterwards Brown had a pot but nothing came of it. Mathieson who was playing -soundly got in a serviceable line kick. fy. rush byjhe Star vanguaTd was well stopped by Furness who found -the t line. ' After a spell of give aod take • play •Fraser '(Star) , was ordered off, l and Star were playing with practically 13 men.. Kohinoors continued to press and Davis got over. The kick at goal failed. Good line kicking by Broivra pdt. Kohinoors once more in an attacking position, and following up one of his own kicks he stopped the return and sent the ball to ; Smith who scored. Brown's kick failed. Shortly after resuming Brown made a dash' for the line and was tackled just in time. Half-time was~"called with the Kohinoors 10 points to the good. Kohinoors at once set up an attack> and Brown made an attempt to get through but was well tackled. Even play followed and. gradually Stars began to get ,the better of- the play. Their forwards broke away, but Brown sent them back with a fine line kick. Shortly afterwards Smith (Star) had a shot from a' free kick but, it was resultlcs. Morris then had a try and piloted the .ball between the .posts. This success woke Stars' up a little' a*hd' they continued to press. Morris had^ another shot within easy range, but he was over anxious and the kick -went wide. Mclnfosh, then broke away and passed to White who cen tired. Hot- play on- the Kohinoor line fol-' lowed and Smith got over but was called, back for an infringement. Once again the ', Star backs got' going but Smith sent a' bad 'pass to Reid who failed to hold it. Erickson had to retire owing to an injury, to his leg. In spite of their being- short handed Star
