Hector Gosse, a 14-year-old boy. re. siding at Lower .tlutt, disappeared from his home on Wednesday nwrniug and has not been heard of since. The boy's mother, as anxious concerning his welfare and cann'.- arrcount for : his strange behaviour. He had about £2 in money with him. when he went away, and .wrote a note t?> his, "mother stating , that' he was goin.ir to- "strike out on his own." Numerous telegrams have been_senLJ:o relatives in different ; parts of ? New Zealand, 'but .up to the present nothingof his whereabouts has been heard.

While en.u;a^ed in unloading railway sleepers from the s.s. Ripple at the wharf to-night, a waterside worker named William Cole was struck on the side -of the head by an iron rail, and sustained. a' fracture of the ba.se of the skull, and a depressed fracture of the vault of the skull. ,Xhe unloading gang. were using r .i couple of. -rails as skids, and as a. sling' of 'rails was ascending" from the hold it struck the end of one of the skids, causing one of the sleepers to slew round suddenly striking the unfortunate mam He was taken to the hospital where an operation was performed to-night, but his condition 'is regarded as critical. He is a married man with a family of seven. '
