DEATH OF TWO PROMINENT ■ FIGURES. GISBORNE, Nov. 20. Mrs J. G. Fraser, an old and respecter resident of Poverty Bay, died yesterday.- She came to Gisborne over forty years ago and took a prominent part in defending Tolago Bay when. Tekboti descended on that settlement/ and is indeed regarded as one of the heroines of the raids. Colonel Porter, Jn his book, says: "Mrs Fraser did Spartan duty, arming herself with a gun and doing everything possible to instil a^spirit c\ courageous defence in to the defenders until relief arrived. DANNEVIRKE, Nov. 20. The death has occrred at the Pah at Tahoraite, of a Maori woman 120 years of age. The -name is Ateuata Wharekiri. In the troublous times, her husband, Hohepa Paewai, was a friendly and with deceased, did much to quell the warlike spirit of the tribe. Most of the Tahoraite block was 'Owned by deceased and;, her descendants, A tangi is being held.
