GREY COUNTY COUNCIL
A meeting- of the Grey County Council was held last evening-. Pxe-s-ent—Crs. Larkin (chair), "J. ft r- agreaves, J. Flynn, j, Tindale, J. Ryall P. Ryder ,Hon Jas Marshall. An anonymous 'letter was received ' in regard to certain matiters. . Cr. Ryall moved that the letter be put in the waste paper basket. [f a man could not put his name to a letter he was a coward. Cr. Hargreaves seconded and said such a person was a despicable. 'being. — 'Carried. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr. James F. White claimed compensation for loss of horse on a County road. The horse was valued at £A 5. Hon Mr .Marshall said it was an unusual case. The accident happened "by the horse going: through a culvet on the Pic'k-a-Pack track. H© thoug-Mi the owner was entitled to some compensation, perhaps £20. He moved that ,£2O compensation be granted. . • The cleric said this opened up a very large question. Cr. Flynn said they would have to compensate all persons suffering from injury. >Cr. J. Ryall said that as Hon Mr. Marshall's motion \vas> not seconded he moved that no action be taken, as the law did not hold the county responsible. Cr. P. Rider said if a man lost his horse by a faulty road he should receive a fair amount of compensation. Cr. Ryall said if the council were negligent the complainant could have an action im- law. Cr. Tin dale •seconded Cr. Ryall' s motion. i \ Cr. Hargreaves . said' usually the person affected put such an enormous vallue on their loss. The mattier should be reported on .by ihe ■engineer. Cr. Ryall's motion was put and carried. From Hon. Minister of Public Works, acknowledging: receipt of application for grants for different works, stating that same would be considered when Public Works Estimates are heing- prepared. — .Received. From Hon. Minister of Mines, with reference to grant for construction of an additional length to -Nelson Greek Footbridge, >of ,£3lO and .stating- that the request would receive careful consideration. — Received. From same, acknowledging receipt of application from Patrick Carroll far prospecting subsidy. — Received. From same, with reference to similar application .by J. H. Tibbies, grant ing- a subsidy of 2s 6d a foot for 600 feet. — Received. •From same, . granting prospecting subsidy of .£75 to Larcombe and party. — Received. From Superintendent -State-Guaran-teed Advances Office, forwarding parti culars re ,£2OOO loan for Lees' Fenry footbridge.— Received and Cr. Har» graves, moved that a table ot the rates for the twenty years ibe prepared Cr. Ryall) seconded. — Carried. From Government Sitatistican asJcing for annual returns. Ordered to be supplied. From Comm'iis,9ioner of Crown Lands, in reply to council's application, stating that >Napoleon Hill, No Town, and Moonlight (Cemeteries are being gazetted and vested in the ■ Council and that a survey will be made of Maori Gulley and Dunganville ceme'tenes.- — Received. From P. M'C'Ormick, asking to have trees along Bell Hill track felled, to prevent them from falling- on his fence. • Application not entertained. From Wesport Harbour Board, asking Council's co-operation in •endeavouring to have telegraphic commiunication established between Barrytown and Charleston.' Cr. Ryall moved that this council co-operative in endeavouring to ig.et tihe connection made. It would b ; e of great advantage to shipping- and ibusiness people. Tbe gap -was only 19 miles. Cr. .Hargreaves seconded. — 'Carried. From D. J. Smith, application fof peirmissiion .to erect a swing gate' across track to Arnold Riyer. Ordered tto fee advfeirtised. From Town Cleric, Kumara, forwarding statement of expenses £30 '8s incmrred in connection w<i.th opening of Trans-Taramakau Water Race. -dr. Ryall said he objected to any amount being 1 paid. The cost was out of all proportion. He moved that ;the account), be not entertained. Cr. Tindale seconded. Seweral councillors' >said they had to pay far their luncheon as any ordinary person.- The presentation of ithe gold nugget to Miss Blow was made toy the Lady Mayoress of Kumara

The amendment was -carried. From Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs, re appointing- deleg-ate to attend conference to be held in Wellington. It was resolved that the chairman and.iCr. Hargieaves attend the conference to be held .'thia Wednesday evening in Greymouth. From Palmerston Chamber of Commerce, expressing appreciation of action of Hon Minister of Defence in enforcing provisions of "The Defence Act,' and asking- Council to approve of same. Cr. 'Hargreaves moved dn accordance with the irequ'esb that this council co-operatives with the 'Chamber of Commerce. Military training was necessary for New Zealand, and the boys were well delighted. • Cr. P. Ryder seconded and said the Defence Act could not harm an3 r one. buit) do an immense amount of good.
