FURTHER OPPOSITION

H:.s Worship -the Mayor (Mr. Perkins) presided at a special meeting io.f the Greymouth Borough Council held last night* to consider the new Local 'Government Bill. There were also prosent— -Councillors Doogan, Sheedy, Sw-cetman, and Tennant. After " discussion of an informal character the following resolution \vas unanimously carried : —

"That, while in favor of ihc simplification of local government, we are not in favor of the Bill as at present drafted."

It .was the general opinion that nothing .further could ibe done until 'he forthcoming meeting of local bodies is held to consider the question.

WAIROA, May 13

A largely attended meeting of local bodies in the Wairoa district strongly condemned the Local Governmenit Bill as regards County Council, Borough Council and Hospital Board.

Resolutions were passed qondemning it for its centralising- tendencies. It was claimed ifohat Wairoa's isolation demands special .consideration. The Mayor of Wairoa was elected a .delegate.

The following, motion was proposed but hoft put, -the delegate elect stating that he would adopt the line proposed: "That the Government be urecommended'if they desire ito simplify local government, to adopt (the charitable aid districts as granted and abolish all road boards, chariifeaJble aid and hospital boards, domain and cemetery boards, town drainage and river boards, and delegate their powers and duties to Councils and Boroughs.

At a meeting' of the South Canterbun' local bodies delegates to-da3 r , Messrs W. S. Maslin and C. N. Orbell were appointed to attend the Wellington conference on the Local Government Bill. A resolution was passed: — "That while improvements i.i the present laws would be appreciated the Bill is npi acceptable as it's adoption would, increase the cost and lessen the efficiency of local government." The inclusion of Waitakif County in South Canterbury province was said to be a strange ''/thing, as they had practically nothing whatever in common. The 'Chairman of the meeting (Mr F. R..\Gillingham]hconV demned the whole measure as undemocratic and in no Avay acceptable. Others said the hospital and education management must suffer if the Bill was adopted.
