A 'CELLO LAMENT
»■ (Shakespeare Out of Work). Tune : The . Lost Chord. Seated one day at the 'cello, I was worried and .ill at ease, And my fingers wandered idly Over my trousered knees. I know not what I'd been playing ■ Or what I was trying to then ; But there flashed through my memory — a vision Of all I had done for men. I thought of the widows and orphans I'd foenefitted nig-ht after night, I ithougfht Of the choirs and orchestras I 'celloed for with all my might. I thought of the Salvation Army, _ Of Fire Brigades galore, Of hospitals, athletic societies, And 'brass fbands I helped o'er and o'er. . . ' • ■- I thought of the anniversary I'd given the people free, . Every seat filled on the grouncTnoor, But scarcely a shilling for me. Of the two friends who'd gathered the pennies — A small souvenir for me — And wKb next day resembled devotees Of the goddess D.O.L. whiskej'. It may be that dearth's brig-lit angel .Shall come for my soul, and then It will ibe that only -in Heaven Shall you hear all I've done for men.
