The weight of the iron and steel used in the construction of tihe Ashburton tower>-and tank in connection with the high-pressure water scheme is seventy-seven tons. The tower is 126 ft in .height, including the bank, which will 'hold 58,480 gallons. The tank is 18ft deep and 25ft in diameter, and 8000 rivets were used in erecting the structure A pier has been' erected under Ihe centre of the tank, in wftiich the main pipes are encased, and ninety tons of concrete were used in its manufacture.
The Federal Prune Minister sits amid a .pile o F designs sent to coimpeite for the £11)0 prize' for the new Australian -bank notes, states a Sydney journal. As preference is to be ■given to sketches depicting Australian scenery, nearly every design has the kangaroo, ithe opossum, or the emu in various attitudes. The Aimeri can Bank Note Ooirmpany and Messrs Bradbury, Wilson, and Company, of London, ihave sent ouT representatives in the hope of securing a oonitract for printing the notes. They are prepared to erect, a factory foir the purpose in Aiistralia. The polic\ r ■of the Government is, however, to do the work itself.
