Giving evidence before the Royal >Com.mis,sion inquiring the financial loss sustained by Tasmaia through. Federation, Sir Elliott Lewis (ex-Pire-mier) siaid that while itihe other states ihad .gained on a;n average £1,066,000 annually by federation Tasmaoiia lost £114,000 annually. Another effect was that the. large factories on tifoe mainland had developed und ear federation compelling some small factories in Tasmania to close and renderinir others less profitable.
