Tihe Defender left- Hokitika yesterday with a cairgo of timber for Lyttelton ' The Kairaki had aboard one hun.. dred thousand feetof timber when she left Hokitika yesterday. As it is understood that the steamer could have taken over double that quantity without difficulty, the: opinion Shas been expressed that it was rather unfortunate, for the sake of the (reputation of the port, that the s'eajner was limited to the qunDiity mentioned, a s she had the opportunity of shipping a, cargo of 1 quarter of a million feet, of timber, which "vas there and to spare. Such a cargo would have established a record for the port.
