SCULLING. PEARCE v. WEBB. (By Victor, in Wang-artui Herald.) Harry P-earce intends leaving Sydney on Saturday, the- 19th inst:, so should be in Wanganui within a fort T night. W. Fogwel is coming: over with him as trainer and pacemaker, and also Mr C. Lions, a friend of the Austral Tan champion's. They will stay at the ■ Opokongaxo' Hotel, _ the landlord of "wßtch has offered to put them up. This means that Pearce will do. all his work. on the championsliip course. He is im good form n0.w, . . and is very ■ confident that he will be ..able to put up the best performance of his career on Boxing". Day. Ned Triokett (first world's champion) recently got hold of\him and advised hini to shift his rigging^ which he did, and the result is that he can 1 now get the same pace out of his boat with much less labor. He also reckons that the alteration will enable, hun to cut out a jour»ey severs] lengths faster. If this is so he will proyt: a very hard nut for Webb to crack. , Starting on Monday, Webb goes into solid work, and will thus have just six weeks to get fit.- Be is well n"o\v, the spell evidently having done him good. He is 11.5, which is heavier than he has ever been at the commencement of his training. He has every confidence that he will get righi back to form, and there is no reason why. he should nbt do so. If lie can reproduce his old brilliancy, then his supporters need have no fear of the result, though the fact , must not be lost sight of that the Australian cham pion is a very fine sculler, with a record which proves -him- to be a doughty opponent for any man. It is daub tful' whether there is a man in the world, barring Arnst, capable of bearing either Pearce or Webbj with all- due respect to Barry, and the great race he ds supposed to have given the world's champion. In the circumstances, the forthcoming match will be an interestinig one. . It is fairly safe to say • -that providing Pearce defeats Webb his friends will seek a match with Arnst, .as the Australians are very anxious to regain the world's championship, wrested from .them by the Wanganui sculler in 1907. and of which Arnst now appears to have such a solid .grip. Just what will happen in the event of Webb winningremains to be seen, but it is quite on the cards that his supporters will want him to have another lilt at the 1 present holder oi the world's championship title. - : i A friend writes from Sydney enquiring whether there is- any chance of getting Webb to go over and com- ', pete in the big handicap' to b« roweid .on. the Parrama.:ta in February next. Arnsi intends competing, also Pearce. bat the promoters are particularly anxious for Webb to take pan, as the public want to see him rowing there again. Reasonable expenses would be aikwe'd him if he can' spare the time .to go over. '
