The British Vice-Consul at Castellamare di Stabia was almost murdered recently by an angry mob in the province of Salermo, whither he had been despatched by the Consul resident in Naples to serve a writ of summons before :the London law courts upon two brothers of Italian' nationality carrying on business there. When the Vice-Consul made his appearance at their house one of the brothers threatened to put a knife through him. The frightened official took to his heels, but as he fled down the street the brothers pursued him, crying out . to passers-by, "Stop that thief;'.' In vain the' Vice-Consul protested his identity, and. die crowd, some of whom were armed with stilettoes, -beat him brutally about the head and back. - j , '■' Encased in a leaden' shell, which reposed inside a mahogany coffin 1, which in turn, was enclosed in a great wooden case, the body of King Mwanga has been taken from :the Seychelles, where he died seven years ago, to Mengo, Uganda, where he once reigned and whence he was exiled by the British: Government. Members of a certain -tribe whose privilege it is to perform the funeral rites of deceased royalty bore the heavy coffin .up coun%try from the. coast of Men'go, and there, says a correspondent, the exking having become a Christian, a service AVas held in the Cathedral.
