AN ADVENTUROUS CAREER.
The death is announced of a famous sea rover and fighter of the olid' English type in Thomas Brown, a native of Cley", who passed away in the adjoining' Norfolk parish of Beckham at the age of eighty-eight. He was the last survivor of the expedition to Sarawak, which led to the owner of the yacht, the Royalist, Mr James Brooke becoming, the first iWhite Rajah of Sarawak. Before this Brown had isailed in a vessel' bound for the
China Sea under Betters •of marque arid after much fighting his captain was captured, and by Imperial decree sentenced to .the awful death known as slicing ■to pieces. At. the same time an English woman named Noble, fell into the hands, of the .Chinese, who put her in a cage and sent her. round in triumph through several Chinese provinces. . When Brown finally returned to Yarmouth, after starting experiences in the Malayan Archipelago, he found he had. long- -been given up as dead. He used to have many interested Auditors of his -tales; of. piracy and bloodshed in the Archipelago,' and Cap.tain x *Marry,at, the novelfrst spent many -hours with him while he.recoun.ted some blood-curdl-ing experiences-., • In his old. age he. was aided .by the present Rajah of, Sarawak and other gentlemen.
