BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Grey Borough j Council was held last evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr A. C. Russell), chair Crs. Sheedy, Bierne, Shanna"han, Sweetman, Petrie, Tennent, Perkins, Bignell and Kerr. Mark :Sprot and Co forwarded . a statement of sale of sections amounting to £144 13s 6d, the expenses being 19s. Mr Phillips, County Clerk, wrote stating that the County Council would bear one-third of cost for repairs to Cobden bridge. -Received. The Harbor Board wrote stating that as soon as the Harbor Board Bill is passed the borough would be paid the compensation owing to them. Received. The. Public Trustee wrote granting: a title to the land on which the Fire Brigade Station stood. Received. Adjutant Dixon, of the Salvation Army, wrote asking for a donation towards the Army Rescue Work, as some very sad cases bad been treated in this town. Cr Petrie moved and Cr Tennent seconded that the sum of £5 be donated. Carried. Messrs Campbell, Phillips, and Warnes wrote accepting the appointment as a committee of enquiry to go into the office working. Received. Mrs T; W. Parkinson wrote asking for a right-of-way to her property. Referred to the engineer. The Returning Officer, reported officially on the result of the poll of the ratepayers recently taken. Messrs Evans and Brown wrote drawing attention to the state of the drain in Chapel Street "west and asking, for an asphalt footpath. . Cr. Shannahan moved that the footpath be asphalted as it was a principal thoroughfare leading to Elmer Lane Station. The Mayor agreed with the necessity of the work, but they had no money. He asked the councillors to refrain from voting money out of the general account until after March. Cr Bierne seconded Cr Shannahan' s motion. He said High Street was being done out of general revenue and the very dearest metal put on to patch. The metal cost over 12 S 6d. It. was scandalous the way things were being carried out. Mr Lord said the land was vested in the Railway Department. Cr Bignell moved that the dram be cleaned up and loads of gravel put where necessary. Cr Tennent seconded. Cr Bignell' s .motion, was carried. Mr Trenchard wrote asking the Council to purchase Webster's Dictionary which he offered at j£4 10s. Cr Petrie moved and Cr Perkins seconded that the dictionary be purchased. Carried. Mr Robb, on behalf of the Drapers' Association, presented a petition suggesting the hours of closing. Cr Tennent moved and Cr Petrie seconded that the petition be granted. Carried. The Star Football Club wrote asking the Council to form a road to their new hall in William Street. The. Town Clerk stated that £300 jvas on the loan proposais for WilStreet. Cr Petrie moved and Cr Shannahan seconded that a temporary road be put in. The Mayor thought the matter should stand over. Cr Sheedy supported and said the work should be done. The Council could buy dictionaries, but could not repair a road. ( ; _ Cr Bignell moved that tenders be called for the permanent work. It was not right to go and spend money . on temporary repairs. Crs 'Sweetman and Tennent supported Cr Bignell' s view. Cr Petrie withdrew his motion in favor of Cr Bigness- motion ,. which, was carried. • , . j .• The Borough Solicitor ' wrote giving his opinion re a.- stationer. He held that Dixon's. petition was in order but - l ie counter-petition only' had one bona fide stationer.' „•■ , ; s . Cr Perkins moved and Cr.
