MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

Yesterday was a beautiful day for the el'eotions, and^ great interest was taken and the polling was heavy. Throughout the day the candidates were very busy ,oanvassing, and traps were busily engaged bringing in people to vote. Shortly before eight o'clock about 1,500 people assembled outside the Town v Hall to hear the resufE. At 'B.3o Mr Lord ? the Returning officer announced the result as follows: —

Majority for Mr Sweetnian... 51 ' Mr Russell, was greeted with cheers when he> stepped forward to return thanks. He said he was proud of the position he held on the poll and' would do his utmost to show the electors that he would work in the interests of the town. He stated that -he had" had a hard fight, -as a strong party was against him. He specially thanlved the ladies. for the solid vote they had given Jbitn. (Applause.) Three cheers v were then given for Mr Russell. , Mr Coatea xrsi& loudly cheered. He congratulated ' Mr Russell on his win. and hoped be would do his utmost to further in, the interests of the town. Mr Russell had won on his merits and should be a proud roan. He thanked all those who had supported him. He wished, to tihank the councillors and Town Clerk and office staff for ihe courtesy and kindness shown to him during his term. (Cheers.) \^ Mr Sweetman said he was gratified at the result. Mr Jackfcon had run an honourable election and there had been no bitterness. During his term as councillor he :WouW work for the good of the ratepayers. (Cheers.) Mr Jackson thanked his supporters and regretted that ho was not successful.' He congratulated Mr Sweetman and hoped he would be a good councillor. , Mr Russell called for three cheers for the Returning Officer and his staff which were enthusiastically given.
