TRAIN ACCIDENT.
MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.
(Red 1.22 p.m.)' SYDNEY, Dec 9. -A railway smash occurred at the Blue Mountains.. A portion of a goods .train broke away on a ziz z.ag and, running back, collided with a goods train standing at Clarence Siding. An. engine and twenty-five trucks were derailed and Avere badly smashed. A portion caught fire but the outbreak was soon extinguished. Two guards an engine driver arid a passenger were injured- ■. ' ■ " , . Costello, a guard, died, from injuries received in the Blue Mountain accident. The passengers hada miraculous escape. The runaway vehicle dashed down a grade of 1 for forty at a terrific pace. The passenger cars .wsse at the end of the train be"caxne foremost on the- mad rusn downwards. When the breakaway occurred the derailment of waggons following the car,, stayed the onward progress arid saved 'the lives oT the passejigers. The' train was laden with •copper, nvool, chaff and Avpcd and they burned fiercely. When the fire broke ■out a hundred, men; working at the deviation line tihrew earth on the fire and extinguished it.
