Mrs Harry Campbell has taken charge of the Brunner Post office Inspector Scott will make a start on his. annual examinations of the schools in the Grey District on the 7th inst. Mr Leslie Reynolds was in town yesterday, and left by the evening train for Hokitika Mr James Goodhall, President of the Wharf Laborers' Union, is at present indisposed. Mr H. B. Burnett, secretary of tht Harbor Board, has been confined to his bed for ihe last few days suffering from an attack of rheumatics. : Mr Alavittncfc, tor many years Postmaster at isrunner, nas been transr rerreu to Karamea and lert by tne I Aranura to rake up his new duties. Mr John Flynn, of Red Tack's, is at present " in town, and will attend a meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day. The many friends of Mr Gerald Perotti {sen.;- will regret to learn tnat he is very seriously ill ,and small hope held out tor his recovery. We regret to learn that Mr Charles McQueen received word yesterday of the deatn of nis brother John, which took place at Jtfallarat. Mr McQueen will have the sympathy of his manyfriends in his sad bereavement. We regret to learn that Mr Maloney, headmaster of the Ahaura school, is very ill and confined to his bed. The doctor states that it will be some weeks before he is able to take up his duties. ■ . , ' I Messrs Murray and Mclntosh, settlers at Slatey Creek were in town yeserday in connection with educational matters. They have donated a section of land, and built a school at a cost of .£SO, the Board finding .£25. Mr Chas Hertlet, formerly of Greymouth, and now Superintendent of the Pacific cable at Doubtless Bay has been granted six month's leave of absence on full pay He will visit the Coast, spending some, time as the guest of Mr McLean at Otira. At the expiration of his holidays he will be promoted to the charge of the Fanning Island 'station. In about a year's time^ it is understood, he will be promoted to the American station, the second highest- post in the cable station. His many West . Coast friends will be pleased to learn of Mr Hertslet's success.
