BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Borough Council vas held last, evening. Present — wrs. Coates, Shan'nahan, Kettle, Russell, Tennent. The Town Clerk apologised for the absence of the Mayor and C, Lynch, who were called to Wellington on important business. Cr. Coates was voted to the chair. ■ The_.resolutions in accordance with the Act were passed making the annual rates. Mr S. Ainsworth, Inspector of Nuisances, applied- for three weeks leave of absence. ■Mr Kettle wanted to know what Mi Ainsworth was doing now that tht inspection of meat wa s done by tht Government Inspector, and what wai' Mr Amsworth'is salary. The Town Clerk— Mr Ainsworti .gets^69 13s 4d a month. 1 . Cr. Coates said thi s matter was being dealt with in the classification scneme. 'Cr. Tennent pointed out that Messrs Hogg and Ainsworth would get one month's notice, and then appliation s called for the position. The request for the' holiday was granted. -Mr A. Goodall, lamplighter,: applied for an allowance for horse feed, as feed had gone up considerably. Cr. KettJe moved that the application be referred to the Finance Committee. • Cr. Shannahan seconded. Carried. Mr B. Hart applied for permission to put his pony in part of the Recreation ground. He was prepared to pay a small rental. The Town Clerk stated that the ground was leased, but three years' rent was owing. Cr. Kettle said accounts such as this ' should ■ not be allowed to run. Cr. Kettle moved that the application be referred to the Reserves Committee. vgr^vTeftnent seconded. Carried. ,'-*C;f. Kettle moved and Cr. Russell seconded that the Reserves Committee report on all reserves with the object of leasing by tender. Carried. The secretary of the jGrey Swimming Club applied for the usual grant of ;£io. On the motion of Crs. Shannahan and. Tennent the amount was granted. The District Engineer of Railways wrote refusing to malce a right-ot-way at the rear of the properties in Gresson street. Cr. Kettle moved that the letter be forwarded to His Worship the Mayor to interview the General Manager of Railways on the matter. Cr. Tennent seconded. Carried. CLASSIFICATION "SCHEME. Cr..j Coates. reported that the committee were not ready with the report. " . ... Cr. Kettle suggested that a committee meeting be held on Thursday evening to deal with the matter. Cr. Coates said he thought the scheme should be considered at the Council table, not in committee. The Town Clerk had drawn up a scheme. Cr. Russell— Why accept the Town Clerk's scheme. The committee should do thelwork. Cr. Coates said ' the information was necessary, I Cr; Kettle— You. Cr. Coates, are shirking your duty. Cr. Coates— I am not shirking my duty. Cr. Kettle-rrWell, where is your report? Cr. Coates— The matter .supplied by the Town Clerk is purely to guide the committee, not a report to adopt. Cr. Russell— I s it right to accept information from the Town Clerk, who is a paid official, on a matter such as this. Cr. Coates— You can consider the scheme, and haye your own opinions which you can exipress. Cr. Shannahan said Cr. Coates was not shirking his duty. The Town Clerk was the" only person who could give the information. Cr. Tennent moved that a coDy of the' Town Clerk's scheme be supplied to every councillor so that he would be able to debate the. matter at next meeting. . Cr. Kettle seconded. Carried.
