(To the Editor.) Sir,— J3oth at Home and in the Dominion the papers are full of the grievances '(whether they are real or imaginary) of .railway servants of ail kinds. Althougha feel that the public are getting pretty full of the grievances of the Dominion railwaj hands, I would like jto say only a few words on one particular feature oi our railway system. I am preparec to allow that some consideratior should be shown by our railway em nlovees for the safety of their, billet: S°Spared with the uncertainty o: private employ. But is it not a littj too Sard "on the men to compel then to work overtime often through th< long and I6nely hoars of the night and to then force them to knock ot in the daytime to equalise matters No concession 'of any kind is allowe< to compensate for work done at ir rejrular hours, although overtime 1 always paid more for than time dur ing the day? This has gone, on fo • years in this way. I imght, however StioS another little curiosity While the Union Company has to pa, wharf rates for the use of ■• railwa; " hand Che men themselves receiv only their statutory shilling an hour ; —I will not trouble you more at pre / sent.-I am, etc., OBSERVER .
