CAPETOWN,, July .3. The Cape Assembly unanimously adopted the motion proposed by Hon. »J. K. Merriman, thanking the Imperial Government Tor the ! granting of responsible Government to the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony; and expressing the. hope that the federation of South Africa would follow.

Dr Jameson (the Prime Minister), bantered Mr Merriman on coming to the rescue of the Imperial Government, and declared that all South Africa wanted responsible government, only some thought it ought to come earlier and some later.

' Mr Theodore Schreiner refused ito vote on the motion ; declaring- that the Imperial Government had betrayed the native interests by granting unconditional responsible government.
