THE EAST AWAKENINC. BRISBANE, April 24. The Commercial Agent in the East reports that five of the six new gunboats ordered by China from' Japan have been launched. An attempt was recently made to assassinate the Japanese Minister for War by a member of a Korean Secret Society, who was pledged to kill hig,h Japanese officials. He fired four ineffective shots at the Minister. The Chilian and Mexican Governments and the Republic of Columbia are offering great inducements to the Japanese to emigrate there, promising them land grants and money b'ouns- j es. MELBOURNE, April 24. Captain Cresswell, Director of the Naval Forces, in speaking at a dinner, said that the nations of the East are only just beginning to awaken to a sense of their own power, and it was the duty of every Australian to prepare himself and his country to meet the inevitable developments of the future
