RIFLE SHOOTING.
THE TRENTHAM MEETING.
TREN.THAM, Feb 28. The Rifle Association's meeting opened this morning under most favourable auspices. : The arrangements on the ground have never been more complete, and everything is in firstclass order. Since last meeting the grounds have been cleared of stumps 1 and boulders, anil the shooters' ! mounds have ibeen rendered 3ry and comfortable. The number of targets has been increased to 75, and with this number it is expected the meeting will be able to conclude this day week without omitting any event on the programme, and. without unduly taxing riflemen from visting" Trentham, as they jvould otherwise have done, the attendance may be 'considered highly satisfactory. The entries jum ber 352, and it is expected that fully 400 competitors will take part in the meeting. A considerable number, of the rifle "cracks", of the colony are on the. ground, mcluding King, IFvine, Ballinger Brothers, Hy<[e and Randall, and a really first class meeting is arf- ■•! . ticipated. Colonel Collins is in charge ] as usual, and has spared no trouble to secure most complete arrangements, . - _ The commissariat of the camp will be looked after by Lieut. Mabin, whose duties in that department were 'carried out last year in a manner that gave general satisfaction. There will be a competent staff of cooks engaged,, under superintendence of Mr Scott, who for the last eleven years has been chief cook" at the Post Office Hotel. / The alterations 4o the Seddon range have been completed, /and the provision of twenty-five targets on*it, in place of the twelve that did! duty last year, will greatly: expedite the longdistance shooting, besides making eas ier the occasional problems of how to squad the men to best advantage. There will be" many familiar ifaces among the staff and range officers for this meeting — notably Lieut-Col-onel Drummond, Majors .Hughes and Cresswell, Captains Bishop, Forster, Harper, and Turner, and Lieut. Durham.. "■, ' It is anticipated That the final stage of the championship meeting will be finished oh the afternoon of k Wednesday in next week, though the service matches to follow may^ occupy two ' of three days immediately succeeiding..
