PECULIAR AFFAIR AT NELSON.
NELSON, June 26. Considerable excitement was caused i.t Collingwood last night by the arrest of a miner named John Martin, of Golden Ridge, in peculiar and somewhat pathetic circumstances.
. Martin, who is 35 years of age, was married a year and some months. jigo t « a Nelson girl named Robb. They lived happily together, and fhe girl cvms to Collingwood' to be confined. She gave birth to a child on Sunday and died of hermorrhage yesterday. Martin came from Golden Ridge to see his wife, but on the arrival of the Nelson steamer he was arrested on a charge of wife desertion, it being alleged that he has a wife and three children •«t Waihi.

The mother and sisters of the dead girl arrived by the same steamer as the anesting constable, and were greatly prostrated by the developments.
