THE RIVAL CABLES.
MELBOURNE, Feb. 24. Mr Milward, chief electrician of the Pacific Cable Board, interviewed, stated that the Pacific was getting about one-third, of the business; if one-half were secured the present loss would be turned into a profit. He thought there was no likelihood of a reduction in rates. Under existing conditions about 95 per ceni of the messages are sent in code ,each code word representabout four ordinary words, so the sender pays only about 9d per word. Personally, he did not think the pooling arrft.ngmen# witih the Eastern Extension Company would eventuate.
