INVERCARGILL, Jan 29
The annual convocation of Royai Arch Masons was held here to-day. Chapters were authorised to send representatives to the annual meetingr Funds in hand were stated tc amount to £300 and other assets tc £131. Officers were appointed for the year. A banquet was held in the evening.
NELSON SETTLER'S DEATH
NELSON, January 29. Mr John Ford, who arrived in Nelson 42 years ago, was found dead in one of his own paddocks, evidently having broken a blood vessel.

Capt Toomey, of Lyttelton presided and said it was satisfactory to find the finances had a credit balance of £12 Bs. He expressed regret that no Fire Brigades Bills was yet on the statute book for improving the state of brigades but more determined efforts would be made this year. One of the chief difficulties had been the apathy which had taken no steps to invoke £h<? assistance of local legislators, who -we^e not in touch with the objects of the Assofriaiipn jn this dirI ection.
