Admiral Freanantle expresses the opinion that Rozhdestvenaky's cruisers wore apparently masked battleships, and doubtless Togo at the outset utilised the torpedoers to throw the cruisers and transports into confusion, following up the I advantage with his battleships. I The Daily Mail's Washington corr.-s---pondent report., the Navy Department received'a despatch from Tokio that the Suraroff, with Rodhdfestivensky ; aboard, was sunk, Tlie Daily Mail's Seoul correspondent states that Togo, from his base at Masampho, proceeded round the north of Tsushima and opened a terrific, fire on Rozhdestvensky's port column. Tlie Russians fell into disorder and were forced towards the Japanese coast. Every Japanese vessel attacking with repeated torpedo attacks, were attended with tlie greatest success. The Japanese Consul's advices re the battle, state the combined squadrons attacked the Russians near Okinoshima and defeated it, sinking at least four-ships and inflicting heavy damage on others. The damage to" our ships is insignificant. , The destroyer andi *two torpedo flotillas made the attack after sunset. A later report, dated 29th, stated that the main force of the combined squadrons continued in pursuit since the 27th and attacked tiheenemy on the 28th, near the Harcourt Rocks. The group consisting of Nicholas I, Orel, Admiral Seniavin, General Admiral ApTaxine and Izumutud. The Izumurnd fled, while the remaining four vessels surrendered. There was no damage to our ships. According to the statement*; of tho prisoners 'the enemy's ships. sunk in tho engagement on the 27th were the Borodino, Imperator, Alexander, Jemtchug, and three others. Rear-Admiral Diebogatoff and about 3000 were taken prisoners. The following are the damages suffered 'by the enemy, in addition to those given above, since <&o commencement o the battle as reported by the coin--manders not under the immediate* command of Togo, as well as the observation stations: — Admiral Makhimoff, Dimitri Donskoi, Svietlana, Admiral Onshakoff, Kamschatka, Iritessum, and three destroyers. The Vladimir and Monomach foundered after capture. One special service ship, (whose name is unknown, and on© destroyer were cap: tured. / The «ngagement is still in progress. The reception of the news in London was' reminiscent of the scenes following the announcement^ of) the British successes'in th© Boer War.
