JAPANESE GUNS COMMAND ENTIRE HARBOUR.
WARSHIPS ARE SILENT. RUSSIAN NAVAL GUNS. DID FEARFUL HAVOC AT LIOTISHAN. A BRAVE OFFCER. BLOWN TO ATOMS. (Received 0 5 a."m.) LONDON, October 3. The newly mounted Japanese guns command almost the etntire harbour and during the recent battle the Russian warships were silent, and the merchantmen in the harbour were, utilised as hospital ships. The Daily Telegraph's Chefoo correspondent states the Russian naval guns at Liotishaji from an altitude of 1500 feet near Pigeon Bay, did fearful haivoc, the Japanese being repeatedly repulsed. Recently a Japanese lieutenant swam with a torpedo surmounted on a crcssboom at the entrance to Port Arthur and was preparing to discharge it against a battleship wblen the searchlight fixed him, and the forts shelling exploded the torpjedo and the officer was blown to atoms. Gentral Togo declined numerous applications from junior officers wishing to emulate the example.
