INQUEST.

(per pbess association.) Invercahgill, December 13. The inquest re Morton Mains, a victim of the i ail way fatality, was resumed this evening. Whitcome, traffic manager, said he had frequently ridden the velocipide. Had h8 been in the. position of Eraser and Thomas and saw the light of the engine 2 miles off he would have pulled off without wailing for the light again to appear. McCredie, District Engineer, s-iid that Fraser was instructed to inspect his length and get back half an hour before the train passed. If the engine had had a light he could not have failed to see the train coming. A week after the accident, at Ederidwle, ■where the train oiade its first stop and the wreck of the velo .ipede wa&~discovered, and saw the broken smoked lamp glass where Eraser s*w the light would be one mile and fifty seven chains from where he was ; and if the train was running 35 miles and the velocipede 5 miles an hour, they would meet in 2 minutes 47 seconds. It he had been on the velocipede he would have stopped until satisfied that if was the train approaching. The broken lamp glass was clear of the sleepers at the water tank. He was not prepared to say whether smoking would interfere with the light or not. The escape smoke would affect the glass and th* reflector.

George Dempster said the head light was shewing, althongh somewhat obscured on the arrival at Edendale. The inquest was further adjourned till Wednesday. The Jur? went out by ppecial to the scene of the accident to-night.
