Wellington v Canterbury.

(per press association. ) Wellington, December 14. The match between Wellington and Canterbury began to-day, and has so far gone much against the local men. They lost the toss, and were put in to bat on a soft wicket. Frankish carried all before him, securing 7 wickets for 26 runs. No one but Midlane could score, and he only made 30, the innings closing for 30. Galloway got but one wicke', and found the pitch too soft for him. Canterbury made a good start, Sims and Wigley putting on 89 for the second wicket, the latter's share being 40 without a chance. Thpn there was a collapse, five wickets being down at 98, the last three without a tun added. Strauge helped Sim to make another stand, and "the 1 itter carefully batted his way to 74, when Richardson went on and caught him oft his own bowling. Except that he might have been stumped he gave no chance. Strange ' secured 15, and Bennett (the last man) hit well, taking the score to 171 before he was caught. Connell took 4 for 65, Richardson 2 for 12, Hold worth 2 for 27, Uphm and Frankish one each. A few minutes remained for play, and Frankish provided another sensation by clean bowling three nv j n for nothing in the first over, of which there is still one ball to go. The day was fine, and the attendance about 1000.
