THE IRON-SAND PROJECT.
Writing on lst'November, ourspecial correspondent in London Isays : — There is not yet anything definite to chronicle about Messrs Cadman and Smith's negotiations. I understand, however, that Mr Cadman has had several offers, which he has not considered quite good enough. He is now considering a promising scheme, and it seems likely that he and the capitalists concerned may come to terms shortly. A Scotch firm is also showing considerable interest in.the concessions. The lengthy negotiations seem likely to prove prejudicial to Mr Cadman's health if they are much longer protracted, as he struck me as looking far from strong at our interview a couple of days ago. A competitor to the Taranaki iron-sand is announced this week, viz., . the French island of Guadeloupe, in the "West Indies. Vast beds of iron-sand have been known to exist along the coast of the island, but for some reason or another up to the present it was considered against the policy of the Government to have them worked. A concession has, however, now been granted to the president of the Chamber of Commerce at Point-a-Pitre. The sand is very pure magnetic ironsand, free from mpurities, aud yielding about sixty-seven percent, of iron. The iron gives a very superior quality of steel. Practically unlimited quantifies can be furnished, and vessels can be loaded very speedily and safely.- -New Zealand Times.
