THE LEVIATHAN COMPANY.

"An Ex-Shareholder" writes in The Press (Christchurch) of Dec. 9 regarding the above Company as follows : — Sir, — The fate of dredging ventures has been much discussed of late.. As an instance, it will be interesting to watch developments in. the Leviathan, Greymouth. This claim was to be the Hartley and Riley of the Coast. Nothing was too good for it. It started over a year ago, and what has been its history ? It has been a continued record of disaster and failure, owing to mistakes and mismanagement, which it would take too long to enumerate. The directorate has been an outside one. (Otago principally), and the claim is heavily in debt, while preferential shares have not been taken up. At last the dredge has been got on to the solid, where it should have started. Good gold is being got (460z last week), and it is proposed to wind up. Who now is going to benefit by the present state of affairs? A year ago good gold was being got by alluvial miners where the dredge now is. If the ground is worth anything- at all the claim should just begin now to pay handsomely, and it is to be wound up! •God help these companies that are worked by directorates hundreds of miles away from their property. If there are still any shareholders in Christchurch my advice is, look well after your interests. No very large sum is, I believe, required to protect the claim. If you let things go by default now some man who knows) more than you do may thank you for giving him a "soft thing."
