In reply to Cr Petrie, His Worship the Mayor stated that not a penny of the loan had been subscribed hy the Banks, nor had one penny been spent in brokerage. This loan was a great success, and the Council. Reserved the greatest praise for the way they had managed the matter. : ; Cr Steer endorsed the Mayors remarks, and refuted the rumors -made that the banks had subscribed the j loans, as all the subscribers were bona fide. Cr Sheedy thought the ratepayers should be perfectly satisfied with ' the ! way the lo=»n had been raise \. .. The report was adopted. Cr Joyce asked what Mr Napier Bell's charge was for coming to Greys mouth. His Worship the Mayor— Ll32 8s 9<l. Cr Joyce said accounts such as these should be brought before the Council, before being passed, and an oppoitunity given councillors, to discuss them. Cr Bignell thought the charge very high, and considered Mr Napier Bel did not give valrfe for the money. Or Thomas said the charge might be a little high, but the importance of the work demanded the greatest care.. The ratepayers would benefit) by his advice. Cr Shesdy took a similar view to Cr Thomas. . " Gas and Lighting, . " Your Committee have the honor to report that we visited the sites for street lamps petitioned for from time to time, as set down in the following list:— • "1, at Government work shop, Mount Street; 2, at Judge Ward's house, Smith Terrace; 3, Chapel street wes^, on turn to Elmer L?ne ; 4, Turumaha street, near Mr Kettlw's house; 5, Alexander street, at town belt north ; 6, Shakespeare street, at Buc« cleugh street intersection ; 7, High street, at Raleigh street intersection; 8, Cow per street, on bank opposite Mr Blair's house; 3, Cowper street, at Raleigh street intersection ; 10, Cow- . per street, ab Franklin street intersection; 10, Leonard street at Pieston road track ; 12, Pieston road, opposite Mr ShJlton's; 13, Sawyer's Creek road, apposite Mr Dixon's ; 14, High* street, opposite Marlborough street; 15, Shakespeare street, opposite Mr Yolbeide's. «We recommend that the first 10 be erected at the rate ot two lamps per month. The remaining five lamps are in the vicinity of the proposed works, and we propose that consideration of them be deferred until such works are completed. Cr McLean moved ami Cr Steei fecondtd that a kerosene lamp be erected near Mr Shil ton's in Preston road. Carried. The report w«a adopted. Works' Committee.. The Committee reported that they have no recDmmendaliou to make re Mr O'Donnell's application for more filling up of his land. Di Ming's application was deferred till next meeting. Report adopted. Engineer's Report. "The plans for the proposed Town Hall should be put in hand as so-n as possible after the holidays, and I submit a sketch plan for tlie approval of the Council, of a building which I am of opinion will answer the purpose, and be creditable to the town. Will the Council kindly instruct me as to what course they wish to be pursued in regard to this matter." Resolved that the Mayor call the Council together after the holidays' to inspect the plans and come to some decision on tke matter. On the motion of Cr Sheedy it was resolved to instruct the Inspectors to start a crusade against rats ; also that threepence be allowed on all dead rats delivered at the gas works. The Council then adjourned.
