Wellington, August 23. The Council met at 2.30 p.m Hon Mr Jones withdrew the words " detectable traffic" complained of on the previous evening. He explained that his refusal to submit last evening was because he had not understood fche Chairman to rule definitely that~' : the words were unparliamentary, or *that he had committed a breach of the rules. In committee on the Shops and Offices Bill, sub-section 2 of clause 24, which fixes the rate of overtime for office assistants and ledger keepers, was.struck out by 15 to 11. The Council resumed at 7 30. Hon Mr Bolt's motion to exempt warehouses from the/ operation of the j Shops and Offices Bill w&s carried and the whole of the clauses relating to warehouses were struck out. The motion to strike out the c'ause | providing for closing all shops not later than 6 p m on working daya was negatived. On the motion of Hon Mr Jenkinson a new clause was added to the Shops' and Offices' Bill to provide that barmaids be not employed in bars between 9pm and 9 a m. „.. The Bill was reported? as amended, and at 11 15 the Council adjourned till Wednesday week.
