Dredging Notes.
The news of the return from the Grey River Go's dredge on Saturday afternoon caused quite a pleasant ripple of hearty satisfaction, and men congratulated each other on the big fact that the return from the iirst dredge that has got fairly to work on the Grey River would probably give the biggest yield for any dredge in the colony for that week at any rate. The exact return for the week, or rather 124 hours actual dredging, is 107 ozs 19 dwts The gold is an excellent sample and made a nice display in Mr Shilton's window, the fine gold being heaped in the centre of a ring of the coarse gold. As it is of a high orange color, usually a good test of the quality of gold, it ought to command something like L 4 an ounce. The yield of the Waipun« dredge is 10 ozs 11 dwts for 110 hours. This is a steady improvement; but' the dredge is still on outside ground. The Leviathan's return is 64 ozs of amalgam. The exact' value in gold can only be guessed at, as a good deal depends upon the quality of the gold and the extent to which it has been squeezed. For beach gold the usual proportion is onethird gold. Coarse gold would yield a trifle over. ■ There was no return from the Dobson No 2, as little or no dredging was done 4uring the week, the elevator requiring attention , -••■•■.
